As a firm, PJPL is of a size that allows an individualised
development experience while still providing exposure to the most
important strategic problems facing major Australian and
multinational firms. Each PJPL consultant I met during the
interview process spoke of their experiences working on challenging
and interesting problems from an early stage in their careers.
Furthermore, the Principals I met seemed interested in discussing
my personal aspirations and abilities, and how these fit with the
experiences I was likely to have at PJPL.
Immediate responsibility
When I first joined PJPL, I was provided with an opportunity to
work on a project relating to renewable energy, a topical issue
that raises a number of strategic challenges.
Even at that early stage, I was encouraged to
contribute actively to the problem solving process. Instead of
performing isolated analytical tasks, I was in regular contact with
the client and given the opportunity to present some of our
findings in meetings.
The team was small and highly collaborative, which in practice
meant that I had an opportunity to work towards our final
recommendations alongside a Principal who has a wealth of
experience and expertise in the industry.
Ongoing learning is a recurring theme
Ongoing learning is both a priority and an inevitable part of
working at PJPL. I was initially surprised by the amount of time
Principals dedicate to developing the skills and knowledge of
consultants. This takes a number of forms including formal training
and personal feedback. In addition, some of my most valuable
learning experiences have come as a result of inclusion in meetings
and conversations with clients. This willingness to facilitate
ongoing learning is a recurring theme at all levels of the
firm.
Outside interests
Before starting work at PJP I had the opportunity to travel
extensively through Asia, South America and Europe. As part of
these travels, I volunteered building houses and teaching English,
briefly learned another language and experienced a range of
fascinating cultures.
In Sydney, I enjoy yoga, attempting to surf and watching plenty
of AFL and soccer.
